Secondary Programme (10th / HSC)

Secondary Certificate is equivalent to the Xth standard. Eligibility for taking admission to Secondary Programme is minimum 15 years of age (Before Exam) . There is no restriction on choice of subjects and combinations, except that minimum one language has to be taken. Learners can choose their subjects from the NIOS.

Senior Secondary Programmes (12th / CHSE)

Senior Secondary Programme is equivalent to XIIth standard. Those who have successfully passed Secondary are eligible to take admission to Sr. Secondary Programme of NIOS. All applicants need to submit a self attested copy of their Secondary Certificate. There is no restriction on choice of subjects and combinations, except that minimum one language has to be taken. Learners can choose their subjects from the NIOS.

Learners who seek admission in NIOS for Secondary / Sr. Secondary / Skill and Vocation education; are required to submit original scanned copies of documents mentioned below, while registering for admission.

  • Valid Identity Proof (Adhaar Card / Passport / Ration Card/ PAN Card)
  • Valid Proof of Date of Birth (Passport/ School Leaving Certificate / Transfer Certificate/ Adhaar Card on which DOB is mentioned)
  • Valid Proof of Residence
  • Domicile Certificate for students of Sikkim
  • To complete 15 years of Age before exams for Secondary Programme.
  • Secondary/Class X Certificate in case of Senior Secondary Programme.
  • Self attested copy of Caste Certificate in case of SC/ST/OBC
  • Disability Certificate (in case a leaner has any kind of disability)

Fair, Flexible and Student Friendly Examination Scheme

Examinations are conducted  twice a year during April-May and October-November at the specified examination centers, for which notice is released as per the prescribed date sheet.

The examinations are held either online or at designated Examination Centres, which may or may not be Accredited Institutions.

  • Admission can be taken round the year. Admission can be taken either online (12x24x7) or at Study Centres or at Admission Centres. Those who take admission by the end of August, can take their first exam in April-May; those who take admission by the end of February can take their first exam in October-November.
  • The admission is valid for five years and within these five years learners get nine chances to appear in the examination to pass and earn the Secondary or Sr. Secondary certificate.
  • Credit Accumulation System is followed; the credits or marks of every subject passed are kept in record and accumulated till all subjects according to the Pass Criteria are passed.
  • To appear in the examination, candidates are required to register by filling up an examination form paying the prescribed examination fee along with the form.
  • In order to earn the certificate (Secondary or Sr. Secondary, Learners have to obtain at least 33% marks in each subject as well as at least 33% in the aggregate of 5 subjects, including at least one language. In subjects with Practicals, one has to pass with 33% marks in Theory and Practical separately. Theory includes 20% Continuous Assessment, which can be in the form of Assignments, Projects, etc.
  • Question Papers will be provided in Hindi and English language only.

Facility of Transfer of Credit

  • Ex-Secondary / Sr. Secondary students of all recognized Boards of School Education who have passed in at least one subject, but have not completed the programme, may seek admission in the respective course(s) at NIOS and avail facility of open school and skill education programme.
  • The learner has the option to avail the facility of Transfer of Credit (TOC) up to a maximum of four subjects passed from a recognized Board of School Education, provided these subjects are also available in NIOS Scheme of Studies.

The facility of TOC will be permissible under the following conditions

  • The learner who has not qualified his / her course from any recognized School Boards but has passed at least one subject may avail the NIOS ’s
  • TOC facility upto maximum of two subjects. In this case, learner is required to get his / her TOC data verified from the concerned Board and he/she required to submit the same verified result/TOC data along with Admission Application Form at the time of admission under TOC.
  • The subjects which are available in NIOS Scheme of Studies and NIOS Scheme of Examination; learners will apply TOC to those subjects only. And for practical subjects TOC is allowed only when learner has passed in theory and practical separately.
  • The learner will have to pay requisite fee for Transfer of Credit for the number of subjects in which TOC is required.
  • The learner will have the option to get the credit transferred up to a maximum of two subjects from the Parent Board, provided these subjects are passed with at least 33% marks in the last five years (i.e., passed during 2016 or later).
  • While applying for Transfer of Credit (TOC), the learner is required to send parent board failed Marksheet within 10 days of online admission to the NIOS Office along with a copy of the Acknowledge Receipt/Copy of the Online Admission Form. In case of delay in submission i.e. submission after 10 days, a late fee of Rs. 500/- per subject of TOC will be charged through e-service.
